What is strewing?
I read and comment on an excerpt from Sandra Dodd’s website in an attempt to clarify what strewing actually is (and is not) and how we can facilitate through this method.
An excerpt from John Holt’s Teach Your Own helps us to understand what strewing is NOT.
Examining the energy behind strewing
- scheduling for the sake of it
- consulting/sharing not sneaking/watching
- teachable moments vs. truly interesting experiences/tools
When done in earnest and without manipulative intent, strewing is a form of facilitation and a means of joyful connection.

Thanks for the shout out Sarah! As always AWESOME podcast!! The above mentioned blog is not as update as it could be perhaps, but stay tuned! As I rethink more and more of myself it will be busier!!
LOVE!!
Susan (off to strew some more!!)
I loved your take on strewing (and that you researched it
My favorite analogy was that of the boyfriend who likes spicy food, because it’s looking at a new-love relationship, which is where I think the heart of our parenting should be. We’ve just met and we’re falling in love- the things we do and the way we treat each other are designed to communicate that growing love, and honor each other’s individuality. We’re exploring the world together and enjoying the way we all reflect our experiences. I think that’s an excellent way to describe the parental relationship *I* am striving for with my kids.
Hi Sarah–I would like to say I listened to your podcast but I got to about the part where you talk about Sandra Dodd coining the term Strewing and my ipod died. I will try again today! But I wanted to let you know that I LOVE to strew–I would love to be a professional strewer. Like setting up shop windows and display tables. But until then– I have a Friday Feature on my blog called What’s On My Strewing Table? This week we brought Spring In.
